Exploring the value and utility of a tweetchat for learning - #CMEchat

Probably my favorite #CMEchat to date - small, but very, very vocal community today discussing tweetchats in general and using #CMEchat as a model for continuing professional developement - and we came up with a lot of ways to makes it better - thanks!

Here are topics for the day:

T1: Why do you participate in #CMEchat? For the people? For the topics? For the convenience?

T2: As you got started participating in #CMEchat how steep was your learning curve? How long before you felt confident here? Why?

T3: Now that you feel more comfortable learning here, how can #CMEchat be improved so that you may learn more effectively/efficiently?

T4. How can we extend our weekly #CMEchat learnings to the 1,000’s of colleagues who aren’t here? (v-blogs, whitepapers…)

T5: What elements of #CMEchat (pace, brevity, archives…etc) can be leveraged to support your CME program? Which elements translate best?

T6. We have been sharing via #CMEchat for 23 weeks now, so what are the top lesson(s) you have learned so far?

  • CommPharm     RT @cmewriter: T4 The real-time banter of #cmechat — one of the things that makes it fun — would be lost in blog/wiki model :(
  • spelletier           RT @cmewriter: T4 The real-time banter of #cmechat — one of the things that makes it fun — would be lost in blog/wiki model :( #cmechat
  • cmewriter          Yep, hard to be armed with links in the moment RT @JediPD: Intuitive reaction can later be confirmed with links! #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     RT @cmeadvocate: t6 - top lessons: if you are open to learning, capable of filtering, and willing to share... #cmechat
  • kenny_cox        So true - it's the peeps @cmewriter: T4 The real-time banter of #cmechat — one of the things that makes it fun —
  • cmeadvocate     .@JediPD - right. that is why would we need a pull-through discussion from which to engage continually, asynchronously... #cmechat
  • JediPD  Intuitive reaction can later be confirmed with links! #cmechat
  • cmewriter          T4 The real-time banter of #cmechat — one of the things that makes it fun — would be lost in blog/wiki model :(
  • cmeadvocate     t6 - top lessons: if you are open to learning, capable of filtering, and willing to share...you will build a rock solid CPD network #CMEchat
  • SEEdPublisher  RT @cmeadvocate: .@CommPharm - is this a wiki-model or a LinkedIn model? #CMEchat
  • JediPD  Discussions would slow to a crawl & one would have to be sitting with an array of references like Quick Draw McGraw! @cmeadvocate #cmechat
  • kenny_cox        Links are a key reason to participate @cmeadvocate: T3 - more references & links to support our #CMEchat discussions.
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat T3 - I agree; moving from subjective to objective...reinforcement...
  • CommPharm     IMHO Wiki model is better Linkedin has clutter in their posts usually RT @cmeadvocate: is this a wiki-model or a LinkedIn model? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate     T3 - I personally would like to see more references & links to support our #CMEchat discussions...is this the pull-through we need?
  • JediPD  The essence of an idea is in a few words. The rest fillin. Concepts arise in a single thought and are lost in minutiae @meducate #cmechat
  • spelletier           @CommPharm b glad to post on Capsules blog if anyone would comment. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     .@CommPharm - is this a wiki-model or a LinkedIn model? #CMEchat
  • CommPharm     T4 I think if you posted the #CMEchat questions on a blog post we could respond and discuss around our schedules, plus can share more ideas
  • CMEChat          Final topic = T6. We have been sharing via #CMEchat for 23 weeks now, so what are the top lesson(s) you have learned so far?
  • meducate          Could you expand on that? :) RT @JediPD: Brevity is the soul of an idea (borrowed) Works for me #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     .@CommPharm - that is such a great statement...tweeting is a great teacher of less is more... #cmechat
  • meducate          Yup RT @cmeadvocate: t4 - I am hearing that we should have some special edition #CMEchat's with live guests held at a few different times.
  • cmeadvocate     t4 - I am hearing that we should have some special edition #CMEchat's with live guests held at a few different times. #soundsgood2me
  • JediPD  Brevity is the soul of an idea (borrowed) Works for me #cmechat
  • meducate          T5 #CMEChat - This format could serve as a pre or post activity discussion forum, to assess needs b4 and impact l8r
  • kenny_cox        Often difficult to attend @meducate: T4 #CMEChat do you think that having the chat at another day/time would help to reach more?
  • CommPharm     T5 - Frankly an idea in 140 chars has taught me to be more concise when explaining ideas in my CME programs #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t5 - the brevity seems to work for me to support learning..I tried a 60" Discovery CME TV show yesterday...good topic, way 2 long. #CMEchat
  • cmewriter          Yep, even if just occasionally. RT @meducate: T4 #CMEChat do you think that having the chat at another day/time would help to reach more?
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat, nah, I like the rapid pace...keeps me focused and involved
  • JediPD  The Borg Collective! @cmeadvocate #cmechat
  • meducate          #CMEChat #thesunisoutinNewYork!
  • cmeadvocate     is that Klingon? RT @JediPD: 5 is cabalish. 10 is a discussion, 100 is difficult to follow and 1000 is a Lorentz strange attractor. #cmechat
  • meducate          @spelletier #CMEChat - Make it happen! Then we can reach the 1,000s
  • JediPD  5 is cabalish. 10 is a discussion, 100 is difficult to follow and 1000 is a Lorentz strange attractor. #cmechat
  • CMEChat          T5: What elements of #CMEchat (pace, brevity, archives…etc) can be leveraged to support your CME program? Which elements translate best?

  • meducate          T4 #CMEChat do you think that having the chat at another day/time would help to reach more?
  • cmeadvocate     et tu? RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - trying to type quickly to keep up with the pace of the questions #sarcasm
  • spelletier           @meducate totally down with that idea! Agree we need to summarize, get info out #cmechat
  • kenny_cox        Tough to keep up now! @spelletier: T4 would get ridiculously chaotic. May b better kept smallish #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     .@dean_jenkins - this is the culture clash in the CME community...a walking contradiction often...#intentionalsilos #cmechat
  • meducate          Precisely! RT @dean_jenkins: @meducate Ah yes. Worked for us in London by getting @mededhelen involved. #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     @meducate Ah yes. Worked for us in London by getting @mededhelen involved. #cmechat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - trying to type quickly to keep up with the pace of the questions #sarcasm
  • JediPD  You can bring the complacent to water but you can't... #cmechat Enticing them is difficult enterprise but certainly worth taking. #cmechat
  • meducate          T4 #CMEChat - perhaps we need a weekly #youtube summary of the chat, or a written summary each month in, say, Medical Meetings...
  • dean_jenkins     T4 - the 'value' of the learning needs to be explained to help the complacent see the point. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     possessive of mean? RT @meducate: @dean_jenkins #cmechat I don't need that! I mean't each of us locally...
  • meducate          @dean_jenkins #cmechat I don't need that! I mean't each of us locally...
  • cmeadvocate     @allianceforcme, listening? RT @spelletier: T4 could be interesting session at Alliance mtg—a live tweetchat in room & on screen? #cmechat
  • spelletier           T4 actually, if there were 1000s on live chat, would get ridiculously chaotic. May b better kept smallish #cmechat
  • cmewriter          T3 #CMEchat session at #ACME12?
  • meducate          Welcome to the @cmehulk #CMEChat training course...uh, that won't work...
  • dean_jenkins     Yes. More air miles. RT @meducate: T3 I am thinking #CMEChat Road Trip - bring the chat to the tweeters...new and old... #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     but what about the complacent? RT @JediPD: T4: Offering quality idea swaps brings in the inquisitive and the elite and the hungry! #cmechat
  • spelletier           T4 could be interesting session at Alliance mtg—a live tweetchat in room and on screen? #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     Build from 10s to 100s perhaps over the next 23 sessions is more feasible than getting 1000s involved. #cmechat
  • meducate          T3 I am thinking #CMEChat Road Trip - bring the chat to the tweeters...new and old...
  • cmeadvocate     T3 and T4 seem like perfect fodder for a big green friend....#CMEchat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat T3 - I wasn't suggesting elders. I was thinking of other experts from #meded etc as well
  • cmewriter          Keep forgetting not everyone 'gets' it. #geekcurse RT @cmeadvocate: yes, many times...but they have to 'get' a tweetchat first... #CMEChat
  • cmeadvocate     I've considered that too! RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - true, so get to them live and tweet with them #mentoring
  • JediPD  T4: Offering quality idea swaps brings in the inquisitive and the elite and the hungry! #cmechat
  • spelletier           T4 do we extend by engaging the LinkedIn groups? How can that b brought in? #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     T4 - 1000s is very hard. A paper perhaps. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t3 - i cringe thinking about some of the CME elders trying to 'teach' during a tweetchat...technology is a secondary concern. #CMEchat
  • spelletier           T4 goes back to some of our T3s: wiki, blog it, writeups in pubs like Medical Meetings... #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     +1 RT @cmeadvocate: t3 - my learning curve as the moderator has scared me away from inviting guest experts - faculty skill is key #cmechat
  • CMEChat          T4. How can we extend our weekly #CMEchat learnings to the 1,000’s of colleagues who aren’t here? #wasthattoofast ;-)
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate faculty skill is always key! In chat maybe even more than IRL #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     That can work. #doneit RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - true, so get to them live and tweet with them #mentoring #cmechat
  • meducate          #CMEChat sometimes we have to use traditional methods to introduce new ideas - you still moderate and let em watch and learn
  • cmewriter          Great idea. Ideal guests? RT @meducate: #T3 #CMEChat @cmeadvocate Have you considered guest participants/tweeters?
  • cmeadvocate     t3 - my learning curve as the moderator has scared me away from inviting guest 'experts'....IMO, faculty 'skill' is key ;-) #CMEchat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - true, so get to them live and tweet with them #mentoring
  • JediPD  Great idea: Sugget a topic daily with the hashtags. Responders are your participants. Then once a week corral them in. @cmeadvocate #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     yes, many times...but they have to 'get' a tweetchat first... RT @meducate: #T3 #CMEChat Have you considered guest participants/tweeters?
  • dean_jenkins     Some 'reification' needed. RT @spelletier: @dean_jenkins @cmeadvocates archives r useful, but unwieldy. Wiki idea, will ppl use it? #cmechat
  • meducate          #T3 #CMEChat @cmeadvocate Have you considered guest participants/tweeters?
  • spelletier           @dean_jenkins @cmeadvocate's archives r useful, but unwieldy. Wiki idea is gr8, but will ppl use it? #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t3 - as for pace...why not schedule topics regularly, but let convos go where ever the may. different strokes? #democracy? #CMEchat
  • dean_jenkins     T3 - perhaps we should target invites to our network rather than blasting off a generic tweet. #cmechat
  • CommPharm     +1 RT @ChargeAheadMktg: @dean_jenkins yes, like the Wiki idea #cmechat
  • JediPD  Needs Assessment: Now that is loaded with powder: #cmechat
  • ChargeAheadMktg         @dean_jenkins yes, like the Wiki idea #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     Agree. RT @meducate: T3 #CMEChat - we need more senior AND more diverse participants to broaden the discussions #cmechat
  • sregnifnet          RT @meducate: Come sit with the cool kids...RT @JediPD: Hi there. Place for another? #cmechat
  • meducate          @JediPD Just seach the #CMEChat hashtag...we are on T3
  • cmeadvocate     t3 - the idea of taking the conversation to the blogoshere is great...I love what @spelletier & @dean_jenkins have done in past #CMEchat
  • meducate          T3 #CMEChat - we need more senior AND more diverse participants to broaden the discussions
  • dean_jenkins     T3 - the archiving that @cmeadvocate does is very useful. Might be due a thematic summary of the last few months. A Wiki perhaps? #cmechat
  • CommPharm     T3 - Why don't we turn this question into something all of us know - Needs assessment for #cmechat
  • meducate          Come sit with the cool kids...RT @JediPD: Hi there. Place for another? #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     Jump in! RT @JediPD: Hi there. Place for another? #cmechat
  • cmewriter          Agree. No need to move to next topic if current topic still hot. RT @spelletier: T3 ...switch just when it's getting good #cmechat
  • JediPD  Hi there. Place for another? #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t3 - at this moment...i think we need more 'senior' participants with different experiences and perspectives...needs to expland. #CMEchat
  • spelletier           T3 re pre/post test, wouldn't that be close to impossible to pull off? Point usually is more exploring topic than testable #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     T3 - other activities between the sessions would be useful to explore those topics that need more time (and thought). #cmechat
  • CommPharm     Agree but it depends on how many coffees i have had before the chat RT @dean_jenkins: T2 - I took a while to get usd to the pace. #cmechat
  • meducate          T3 #CMEChat - we could have a periodic assessment, but pre/post each time? May be overkill
  • meducate          T3 #CMEChat - responses to each question should determine the pace, some should be cut off, others could go longer...
  • dean_jenkins     Not sure. Might spoil the informality. RT @ChargeAheadMktg: T3 maybe a pre/post test for each #cmechat to gauge ... #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     any1 else agree? RT @ChargeAheadMktg: T3 maybe a pre/post test for each #cmechat to gauge comprehension of the material discussed.
  • dean_jenkins     Agree! RT @spelletier: T3 sometimes I wish we stuck with a topic a bit longer—switch just when its getting good #cmechat
  • CommPharm     T3 - crowdsourcing issues would be helpful. Like how do I not kill the client #cmechat
  • ChargeAheadMktg         T3 maybe a pre/post test for each #cmechat to gauge comprehension of the material discussed.
  • dean_jenkins     T3 I've been using tweetchat.com lately ... makes it much easier. Never got on with Tweetdeck. #cmechat
  • spelletier           Definitely! RT @cmewriter: T2 Good tools help. Tweetdeck, etc, makes #cmechat much easier. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     Absolutely...can't imagine working off the site. RT @cmewriter: T2 Good tools help. Tweetdeck, etc, makes #cmechat much easier.
  • spelletier           T3 sometimes I wish we stuck with a topic a bit longer—switch just when it's getting good #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     .@dean_jenkins - seriously? do you think the pace could be improved - very interesting. Please share more! #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     Sure. I miss it when I can't join! RT @meducate: T2 #CMEChat - It was also fun to participate in a group - right @dean_jenkins ? #cmechat
  • meducate          Agreed RT @cmewriter: T2 Good tools help. Tweetdeck, etc, makes #cmechat much easier.
  • cmewriter          T2 Good tools help. Tweetdeck, etc, makes #cmechat much easier.
  • meducate          T2 #CMEChat - It was also fun to participate in a group - right @dean_jenkins ?
  • CMEChat          T3: ok then, since you feel comfortable learning here, how can #CMEchat be improved so that you may learn more effectively/efficiently?
  • dean_jenkins     T2 - I took a while to get usd to the pace. It is more like a 10 minute chat that takes 1 hour. I learned to be patient. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     +! RT @CommPharm: t2 - Twitter was the learning curve the chat was easy. Plus people are available in real time to help #cmechat
  • spelletier           T2 wicked shallow. Felt comfortable right away. My participation level depends on how much I have to contribute about the topic #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t2 - i had participated in #HCSM and #lrnchat for a while before getting into this racket....but #CMEchat seems to attract newbies too...
  • meducate          CME's most wanted? RT @cmeadvocate: lookie here! RT @dean_jenkins: Brian has the coolest tweetchat cap. #cmechat t.co/oqaNmCo
  • CommPharm     t2 - Twitter was the learning curve the chat was easy. Plus people are available in real time to help #cmechat

  • ChargeAheadMktg         T2 no curve, all the banter breaks any ice right away #cmechat
  • meducate          T2 #CMEChat - I was comfortable going in, but I have refined my participatory (and moderating) styles each week...
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate re posting topic 48 hrs ahead...not sure. I don't think it would make a diff. I like 2 b surprised #cmechat
  • CMEChat          T2: As you got started participating in #CMEchat how steep was your learning curve? How long before you felt confident here? Why?
  • CMEChat          t1 - lots of great ideas so far! keep them coming as we dive into topic 2...#CMEchat
  • CommPharm     Double edge sword. Sometimes the side banter is the value and not the topic @cmeadvocate -posting all of the topics 48 hrs before #CMEchat
  • dean_jenkins     Yes. @spelletier @CommPharm nice to have a break from writing aims and objectives today. #cmechat
  • cmewriter          So true! RT @CommPharm: plus it is a legitimate excuse to take a nice break from writing CME content :) #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     lookie here! RT @dean_jenkins: Brian has the coolest tweetchat cap. #cmechat t.co/pVnga3A
  • spelletier           hehe so true! RT @CommPharm: plus it is a legitimate excuse to take a nice break from writing CME content :) #cmechat
  • ChargeAheadMktg         depends on the topic ;-) RT @cmeadvocate: T1 - and would posting topics 48 hrs before increase/decrease your interest/engagement? #CMEchat
  • CommPharm     plus it is a legitimate excuse to take a nice break from writing CME content :) #cmechat
  • dean_jenkins     Brian has the coolest tweetchat cap. #cmechat
  • meducate          T1 #CMEChat This environment also forces me to make my ideas, thoughts and questions more concise...140 characters is not a lot!
  • dean_jenkins     Agree. RT @CommPharm: T1 - Perspective. We all work in isolation & it is interesting to hear what other issues peop run into. #cmechat
  • spelletier           T1 ok to admit I also like the banter? U guys can b pretty funny #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     T1 - and would posting all of the topics 48 hrs before increase or decrease your interest/engagement? #CMEchat
  • dean_jenkins     T1 - I like being challenged especially when I have half-baked ideas or don't communicate them well. #cmechat
  • CommPharm     T1 - Perspective. We all work in isolation & it is interesting to hear what other issues peop run into. I enjoy the chat as well #cmechat

  • spelletier           T1 past experience has been that I get a lot of value from it, good ideas, food for thought #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate     t1 - .... I take value from the discussion when there is intelligent discussion, even if there r only 4-5 good tweets/hr, i learn. #CMEchat
