CMEchat # 25: Publication planning for the CME profession

Thanks for joining this AM.

Our session was inspired by @KarenRoyTweets (AKA Karen Roy) and a marvelous session she ran at the 9th CBI Educational Grants Conference last week.

Here are our topics:

We’ve talked about sharing outcomes and method papers as a professional obligation, today we’ll discuss specifics. How, when, what. #CMEchat

T1: What should the CME profession being sharing (publishing) – needs? methods? best practices? failures? #CMEchat

T2. What outlets are available to the CME community to share (or publish) their outcomes? [what other resources inform your programs?] #CMEchat

T3: Are there different audiences that should have access to CME ‘outcomes’ publications…besides the CME profession? #CMEchat

T4: What skills set or competencies are needed to publish ‘scientifically sound’ outcomes studies? How do you build these skills? #CMEchat

T5: What are the biggest barriers to publishing (sharing) the various valuable lessons from your CME program? #CMEchat

T6: What is the favorite CME outcomes study that you have referenced, or learned from? Why is it important to you?  #CMEchat

The discussion can be found below or downloaded

  • cmeadvocate      @theCMEguy - but the bar that CE Measure sets seems to undermine their credibility... #CMEchat
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat in Baltimore one night only - would love to hear suggestions for alliance sessions here or email me!

  • CMEChat            Thx for participating in #CMEchat. Discussions herein are assumed 2 b personal opinion & not that of current, past, or future employers.
  • cmeadvocate      t6 - favorite publication: Parboosingh 2011 JCEHP(social learning) or Olson 2010 Adv in Health Sci Educ (serendipitous outcomes) #CMEchat
  • meducate            Perhaps T6 is a difficult question because we have not been a publications-driven profession to all stakeholders #cmechat
  • theCMEguy         T6: I admit to finding CE Measure helpful. If I'm looking for outcomes info, it's the easiest place to find it. #CMEchat
  • aCMEstory          love this—it can create access to experts for critical analysis/feedback. @cmeadvocate: T1-5 - Perhaps a continuum from sharing #CMEchat”
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat t6 faves :anything in med lit on supported CME for value proposition. almanac to JCEHP depending on topic for personal learning
  • meducate            Perhaps it is up to the few, the proud the #CMEChat -ers to lead by example.  We could collaborate and publish...
  • cmeadvocate      it's never too late! RT @KarenRoytweets: #CMEchat oops - too early for shameless plug?
  • cmeadvocate      t5 - once we identify the barriers than we are able to create definitive soln's for each, this is what @KarenRoytweets is doing ;-) #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         @meducate I win! #CMEchat
  • meducate            It's never too early! RT @KarenRoytweets: #CMEchat oops - too early for shameless plug?
  • theCMEguy         Never too early! RT @KarenRoytweets: #CMEchat oops - too early for shameless plug?
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat oops - too early for shameless plug?
  • CMEChat            To frame this differently: T6: What is the favorite CME 'publication' that you have learned from? And, why is it important to you?  #CMEchat
  • DownstateCME  T5 biggest barriers 2 publishing, lack of resources, encouragement, fear  #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate      and maybe this chat helps you!? RT @KarenRoytweets: #CMEchat @jjuch will be 2 at alliance 2012. Myself and @YogAlicia3 leading sep sessions
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat t5 time and costs as a barrier by providers will keep us where we are - not recognized as researchers / serious about improvement
  • cmeadvocate      T1-5 - Perhaps a continuum from sharing (privately) 2 disseminating (socially) 2 "publishing" (formally) - each with value/barriers #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         Reality RT @aCMEstory: #CMEChat resources can be impediment to publishing, but there is a fear factor w / putting it out there for scrutiny
  • aCMEstory          #CMEChat resources can be an impediment to publishing, but there is a fear factor w / putting it out there for scrutiny
  • meducate            #CMEChat T5 - There in lies the problem; we need to publish to prove that we are a profession.  We need to be professionals and do it!
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat @jjuch will be 2 at alliance 2012. Myself and @YogAlicia3 leading sep sessions
  • cmeadvocate      t5 - this barriers question can bog things down fo sho...time and costs are real. I see this as a "professional obligation" #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         T5: Are we talking publishing or sharing? #CMEchat
  • jjuch          BTW: I read the writeup of the chat a few weeks back and someone suggested using TweetChat. Thank you! Much easier to follow #cmechat
  • theCMEguy         T5: The lack of skill in writing it up #CMEchat
  • rmtyner     T5 #CMEchat resources -
  • meducate            Side note - pace of #CMEChat today pretty good!  Not too fast, not too slow!
  • meducate            @DownstateCME #CMEChat - yup, agree totally...
  • jjuch          T5: time — where will it come from. #cmechat
  • jjuch          "T4: would love to attend a session at alliance meeting on publishing. Maybe I missed it but don't recall seeing one #cmechat"
  • DownstateCME  partnering is important, not all have that skill;RT @meducate: #CMEChat T4 - this type of writing takes skill plus talent   #cmechat
  • CMEChat            Slowing down so let move on...T5: What r the biggest barriers 2 publishing (sharing) the valuable lessons from your CME program? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      especially in Med Jrnls. grt pt. RT @aCMEstory: #CMEChat HCP interpretation of relevance to practice is critical for validation and utility
  • cmeadvocate      Collaboration is key, true. RT @theCMEguy: T4: Can always take this part to a collaborator with those skills. Where's @improvecme ? #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         T4: Can always take this part to a collaborator with those skills. Where's @improvecme ? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @DownstateCME - but very few supporters have any idea what they are reading or what it means in terms of +/-'s  #cmechat
  • theCMEguy         Good job Hannibal. Where's B.A.? #Ateam MT @cmeadvocate: "love it when a plan comes together..." #CMEchat
  • meducate            #CMEChat T4 - This type of writing takes skill plus talent.   Writing for professional audiences requires knowledge of style and format
  • DownstateCME  @cmeadvocate @jjuch , most supporters are now asking for outcomes #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate      T4 - i think @theCMEguy raised this point...the skills for scientific publication may be very different than what is available...#CMEchat
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat skills : writing (the appropriate style) and sound analysis / stats
  • aCMEstory          #CMEChat HCP interpretation of relevance to practice is critical for validation and utility
  • cmeadvocate      BTW - the conversation is playing perfectly into the scripted topics for today...."love it when a plan comes together..." #CMEchat
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat to why it worked, I would add why this is important.
  • CMEChat            T4: What skills set or competencies are needed to publish ‘scientifically sound’ outcomes studies? How do you build these skills? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @theCMEguy - by scientific design and evidence-base...it must be hypothesis driven and built upon existing evidence... #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @jjuch - this is an issue for supporters -we MUST be able to discern fact from fiction and we must hold folks accountable! #cmechat
  • theCMEguy         @cmeadvocate I think it's that "methodologically sound" aspect that scares people from pub. How is that defined? #CMEchat
  • meducate            @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - my point exactly!  The how and the who are nice, but the why is critical
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat T2 posters - consider at med meeting presented by faculty or participant
  • cmeadvocate      Tom Roth went on the say: "as for outcomes...who cares! Don't tell me what u did, tell me why it worked...that we can learn from.! #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @theCMEguy - were thy methodologically sound perhaps...but there are so few that fit this bucket... #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         @jjuch I'm not sure that's such a terrible thing. #CMEchat
  • meducate            @theCMEguy T3 #CMEChat - we have to move the needle...we have to talk about the why as well as the what when presenting outcomes to profs
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat outcomes have a place for med audience too - can learn from others successes, pause for thought, recognize good CME
  • cmeadvocate      t2 - but are posters at the Alliance meeting really seen by anyone...shared...discussed. Or are the just feathers in cap? #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         T3: But isn't it the outcomes that we really need to get in front of eyes other than CME #CMEchat
  • meducate            @cmeadvocate  T3 #CMEChat - exactly; know your audiences and focus on THEIR interests and needs
  • cmeadvocate      @SusanBConnelly - ;-p  #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      T3 - it seems to me that needs data is ripe for professional journals; methods and outcomes may belong in front of CME eyes? #CMEchat
  • rmtyner     @cmeadvocate is not shy RT @theCMEguy: I nominate @cmeadvocate RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate Someone has to go first.... #CMEChat
  • SusanBConnelly           Define unscathed ;-)RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #CMEchat - yeah, but you seem to come through it unscathed every time
  • meducate            I agree! RT @KarenRoytweets: #CMEchat not everything merits a manuscript - great opportunities for posters at med meetings too!
  • jjuch          @rmtyner @theCMEguy Short-sighted. But we all know people who will be glad to take what others put out there, but never contribute #cmechat
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat not everything merits a manuscript - great opportunities for posters at med meetings too!
  • meducate            @cmeadvocate #CMEchat - yeah, but you seem to come through it unscathed every time
  • theCMEguy         I nominate @cmeadvocate RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate Someone has to go first.... #CMEChat
  • cmeadvocate      @meducate in innovation the first-mover position is key...in criticizing peers, the firs mover position is suicide (Usually me!) #CMEChat
  • theCMEguy         @meducate That's why I like SlideShare. It's open for anyone/everyone to comment. #CMEchat
  • meducate            @cmeadvocate Someone has to go first.... #CMEChat
  • CMEChat            T3: Are there different audiences that should have access to CME ‘outcomes’ publications…besides the CME profession? #CMEchat
  • rmtyner     @theCMEguy short-sided #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @meducate - IME (in my experience) the first person to post a negative comment is immediately villianized. (usually me!) #CMEChat
  • theCMEguy         @rmtyner Because no one wants to share. There's a connection btwn fear of sharing data and lack of CME profs on SoMe #CMEchat
  • meducate            #CMEChat T3 In this age of digital publication and social media, there are ways to "publish" to ensure crowd review
  • cmeadvocate      @meducate makes the point about medical journals as an outlet...why publish here (dff audience) & who will read it? #CMEChat
  • cmeadvocate      t3. like appreciate press releases of publications...see the difference? we need to ensure some semblance of crowd-review 1st. #CMEchat
  • meducate            #CMEChat T3 We should look at the professional medical literature.  There are recent examples of CME related articles in med journals
  • theCMEguy         @cmeadvocate Right, my thoughts, too. Do outcomes NEED to be peer reviewed? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @rmtyner - b/c the community is short-sighted and foolish...ahem...I mean...oh nevermind. #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      @theCMEguy - the problem is the credibility of novel platforms 4 sharing...anonymous peer-review has been accepted for soooo long. #CMEchat
  • rmtyner     T3 #CMEchat does anyone know why CMExhange failed?
  • theCMEguy         T2/3: How do people feel about putting outcomes/NA on SlideShare? #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate      T3 - what are novel dissemination platforms and how can we ensure 'credibility' beyond JCEHP, Almanac, and CE measures #CMEchat
  • DownstateCME  or vice versa RT @CommPharm: This topic is dynamic as well .  Success in the past could be failure today and in the future.   #cmechat
  • theCMEguy         @cmeadvocate I tend to think everything is too long :-) #CMEchat
  • CMEChat            T2. What outlets are available 2 the CME community 2 share (or publish) their outcomes? [what resources inform ur programs?] #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      Tom Roth went on to say that pubs fail for three reasons: too long,  too promotion, and methodologically overstated #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         True. Lots of repetition, tho. RT @cmeadvocate: T1 - let's not rain on best practices...#CMEchat
  • CommPharm      This topic is dynamic as well .  Success in the past could be failure today and in the future.   #cmechat
  • meducate            @cmeadvocate #CMEChat - can it be a best practice if isn't voted upon, only promoted?
  • cmeadvocate      T1 - let's not rain on best practices...if they move the community...problem is when these are really just snowjobs...promotion. #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         VERY good! MT @jjuch: T1: some argue NAs & outcomes are proprietary but we're all spending time & resources 2 do a lot of same work #cmechat
  • meducate            #CMEChat T1 - We only know of individual failures; we need to learn from collective successes and failures
  • meducate            #CMEChat T1 - Know your audience and your venue and what you hope to get out of publishing successes or failures
  • theCMEguy         T1: Best practices seems to get all the pub. I'm TIRED of best practices. I want to see what DIDN't work and why! #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      early #totd. RT @jjuch: T1: some argue that NAs... are proprietary but we're all spending resources to do a lot of the same work #cmechat
  • CommPharm      Failures also are opportunities as well.  The failure may be execution, delivery, content, KOL. Analysis by the community will help #CMECHAT
  • KarenRoytweets            #CMEchat T1 publish all - just pick appropriate venue, audience, style.
  • jjuch          T1: some argue that NAs and outcomes are proprietary but we're all spending time and resources to do a lot of the same work #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate      But many publications will NOT accept 'negative' studies...and in CME our methods reduce liklihood even more...  #CMEchat
  • rmtyner     T1 #CMEchat need to convince CME pros that talking about failures does not equal failure
  • meducate            #CMEChat T1 - Publishing failures in the context of other successes is a good strategy
  • DownstateCME  T1 great idea, sharing helps the whole cme community #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate      Tom Roth (sleep doc and editor) said: "no editor in her right mind would reject a methodologically-sound needs assessment..." #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         Very underrated. Can teach a lot! RT @rmtyner: T1 #CMEchat I know that no one like to publish failures...
  • cmeadvocate      .@rmtyner  'they' say we learn more from failures than successes..right?.  #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate      The idea for this topic came from a session that @KarenRoytweets led at #CBIgrants last week...one of the best in a loooong time. #CMEchat
  • theCMEguy         T1: All of the above #cmechat
  • SusanBConnelly           T1 Edu Needs should always be published in CME, supports the whole community #CMEChat
  • rmtyner     T1 #CMEchat I know that no one like to publish failures... but i think that it is good to show what did not work and talk about why
  • meducate            #CMEChat T1 - iWe should be sharing as much as possible - needs, best practices, outcomes to help advance profession
  • CMEChat            T1: What should the CME profession being sharing (publishing) – needs? methods? best practices? failures? #CMEchat
  • SusanBConnelly           Susan here, only doing a drive by for #CMEChat today as I'm heading to #AMACME soon
