#CMEchat 27 - How do we encourage practice and feedback loops in CME?

One of our most productive and enjoyable comversations to date...thanks to everyone you 'contributed'.

Check out the first question (prior to topic 1) and the responses...pretty telling about why practice and feedback loops are so important moving forward...

The topics for this week are immediately below:

T1: What are your best strategies for supporting/facilitating “practice” (cognitive or behavioral) following didactic education? #CMEchat

T2: What are your best strategies for providing/supporting rapid feedback following didactic education? #CMEchat

T3: Little disagreement that one-off education is ineffective, what are effective strategies for sequential educational programs? #CMEchat

T4: @SpacedEd (and others) have built products to leverage the spacing effect…how else might the spacing effect be leveraged? #CMEchat

T5: Many groups have begun implementing social technologies to ‘continue the conversation’, what are the simplest social models we can pilot in CME? #CMEchat

  • cmeadvocate    #TOTD - in 2 weeks! RT @spelletier: we need a whole chat just on learner motivation-it's the foundation of so many other challenges #cmechat
  • mathena123      #CMEchat teach in med school about life long learning. Get them early!
  • cmeadvocate    cognitive dissonance... RT @rmtyner: T4 motivation is the Holy Grail - how do teach the learners who don't know they need to learn? #CMEchat

  • DownstateCME t5- on demand learning, iphone 4S—just tlk to it; #cmechat
  • kenny_cox        Exactly - @rmtyner: T4 learner motivation is the Holy Grail - how do teach the learners who don't know they need to learn?? #CMEchat
  • spelletier           MT @cmeadvocate: T4 the idea that learners have 2b motivated to learn is WHY current level of grantsmanship AND planning is failed. #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    @sd90mac6000 - why...the processes and the technologies are much less expensive than many others...and impact much greater... #CMEchat
  • rmtyner T4 learner motivation is the Holy Grail - how do teach the learners who don't know they need to learn?? #CMEchat
  • spelletier           @CMEChat t5 Google, Yahoo, LinkedIn groups are possibles #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    T4 - the idea that learners have 2b motivated to learn is exactly WHY the current level of grantsmanship AND planning is failed. #CMEchat
  • kenny_cox        T5: emails that provide notifications of updates/questions/etc. similar to Facebook et al work very well #cmechat
  • meducate          #CMEChat T5 And what about the not-so-new technologies. It's about any communication, not just the next best thing.
  • sd90mac6000    A tough sell! MT @cmeadvocate: t4 - teaching learners how to learn & set up system that support retention & practice is a huge void #CMEchat
  • CMEChat          T5: what about new technologies to ‘continue the conversation’, what are the simplest models we can PILOT in CME? #CMEchat
  • meducate          #CMEChat So we have to educate the learners about why, how, where, when etc?
  • kenny_cox        T4 - is it all about the incentive to the learner? What is the benefit - (not talking financial) - how does it help them? #cmechat
  • spelletier           sad but true RT @CECSarahG: If they are determined NOT to learn, theres not much we can really do about it. @meducate #cmechat
  • mathena123      #cmechat problem of previous learning being exam orientated and the lifelong learning techniques needed.
  • cmeadvocate    #TOTD RT @CECSarahG: If they are determined NOT to learn, there's not much we can really do about it. @meducate #CMEchat
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate that systems piece is so key—need to build system to support/reward improvement, not status quo #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    @DownstateCME - i've heard that too. but lack of time is not a barrier, it simply means an activity was not important enough, rite? #cmechat
  • CECSarahG      If they are determined NOT to learn, there's not much we can really do about it. @meducate #CMEchat
  • iPodiatrist         T4 #CMEChat Mobile Gaming platform , would allow participants time flexibility along with highly engaging activity And Yes...FUN
  • cmeadvocate    t4 - teaching learners how to learn, how to set up a system that support retention and practice is a huge void in the field, no? #CMEchat
  • meducate          #cmechat T4 It works nicely with case-based education. Space questions out at the same intervals that patients would be seen
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate oh good, so you've solved it then? Awesome. #cmechat
  • DownstateCME both; lack of time is a barrier most cited RT @cmeadvocate: T3: participation in a CME event/series is a behavior #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    @spelletier - when you think of it this way, doesn't it seem so much simpler to solve, dissect? #cmechat
  • spelletier           T3 Thinking about motivating factors: competition (w/ self and peers), curiousity (what comes next?), others? #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    #TOTD RT @spelletier: ...can we use gaming concepts to make participation in sequential activities more attractive (dare I say fun) #cmechat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate T3 #CMEChat - Self-directed participation. An adult behavior. We have control over trying to motivate to participate...
  • CMEChat          T4: @SpacedEd (and others) have built products to leverage the spacing effect…how else might the spacing effect be leveraged? #CMEchat
  • cmeadvocate    T3: participation in a CME event or series is a behavior - so lack of participation means learners lack motivation or lack ability #CMEchat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #cmechat Yup, hopefully
  • spelletier           I'm wondering if we can use some gaming concepts to make participation in sequential activities more attractive (dare I say fun?) #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    @meducate - for some population perhaps...but then your needs assessment would have identified this segment of learners, no? #CMEChat
  • meducate          Welcome - you are in the land of my birth! RT @DownstateCME: Edeline fm Bklyn here, late arrival #cmechat
  • DownstateCME Edeline fm Bklyn here, late arrival #cmechat
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #CMEChat t3 - or their needs were met?
  • cmeadvocate    t3 - IMO, the value of participation has to be real - if learners are not coming back then the prgm must be lacking something. #CMEchat
  • meducate          @CECSarahG #cmechat But then learners participate but may not actually learn during prequel. Any maybe not during sequel either...
  • cmeadvocate    T3 - this is a huge concern in open-loop and closed-loop educational models...w/o a defined cohort/members sequential is tough...#CMEchat
  • meducate          T3 #CMEChat Integrated, curricular, multi-platform education that involves formative and summative evaluation.
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate wish we could give points for learning/doing instead of participating/contributing...oh wait, we can #cmechat
  • CECSarahG      t3. Make sequel infinitely sexier that course 1, make course 1 prereq for sequel. #CMEchat
  • meducate          MT @mathena123: #cmechat T1/2 we learn in diff ways and reflect in different ways. Allow audience different platforms to increase engagement
  • CECSarahG      t3. Offer discount on sequential if they did first session. #CMEchat
  • mathena123      #cmechat T1/2 we learning in different ways and we reflect in different ways. Allow the audience different platforms to increase engagement
  • iPodiatrist         I would agree in certain instances..have to know your audience @cmeadvocate theory suggests that it often alienates learners... #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    T1/T2 - I used to give points for those who participated and points for those who contributed - very different behaviors, no #CMEchat
  • meducate          @iPodiatrist #cmechat I don't believe in calling people out - it has negative effects on them and the rest of the learners
  • CECSarahG      t1/t2 Ditto problem getting them to use the listservs @spelletier @cmeadvocate #CMEchat
  • sd90mac6000    TAmen! RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #cmechat you have to believe in the wisdom of crowds...the non-vocal folks will still be reflecting
  • spelletier           @CECSarahG good question! Reflect doesn't mean talk/post/tweet, it means think about #cmechat
  • meducate          #cmechat sitting across the table from @cmeadvocate while we are both posting is kinda like #duelingpianos
  • cmeadvocate    @iPodiatrist - umm...in some cases yes (often my approach) but teaching theory suggests that it often alienates learners... #cmechat
  • kenny_cox        Doing that right now myself #cmechat @sd90mac6000: just because I'm silent, doesn't mean I'm not reflecting and engaged!
  • meducate          @spelletier YES! And it invloves participants outside the room as well #cmechat
  • CECSarahG      I form plenty of opinions listening to the bigmouths. Must we require that all post? @cmeadvocate @meducate #CMEchat
  • sd90mac6000    just because I'm silent, doesn't mean I'm not reflecting and engaged! MT @cmeadvocate: - but then vocal few dominate discussion..#cmechat
  • spelletier           @cmeadvocate @meducate re vocal few dominating...that's where the e-stuff can come in, let them respond via text or twitter or... #cmechat
  • iPodiatrist         Be in their face call on them@meducate - but then the vocal few dominate the discussion...how do you engage the 75% in the middle? #cmechat
  • CMEChat          T3: Little disagreement that one-off education is ineffective, what are effective strategies for sequential educational programs? #CMEchat
  • mathena123      RT @meducate: @cmeadvocate #cmechat you have to believe in the wisdom of crowds...the non-vocal folks will still be reflecting
  • cmeadvocate    @spelletier - obvious answer is shock collars....but you might try gamification? or community blding techniques... #cmechat
  • sd90mac6000    RT @meducate: @spelletier #cmechat Start by asking the crowd what their key takeaways were. Someone will always volunteer to go first. ..
  • meducate          @cmeadvocate #cmechat you have to believe in the wisdom of crowds...the non-vocal folks will still be reflecting
  • cmeadvocate    @meducate - but then the vocal few dominate the discussion...how do you engage the 75% in the middle? #cmechat
  • cmeadvocate    @bjfogg would teach us that we CANNOT help learners simplify a reflection process enough...to take action it must be simple...#CMEchat
  • meducate          @spelletier #cmechat Start by asking the crowd what their key takeaways were. Someone will always volunteer to go first. ..

  • meducate          @zumba4laffs #CMEChat - Welcome, my friend!
  • cmeadvocate    T1/t2 - We know Q&A is vital...but then it is always designed to go last (time permitting) - need better models, right? #CMEchat
