#CMEchat 43 - The role of feedback in CME

Thanks to all who joined our 43rd #CMEchat. We had a very practical discussion about how to integrate best practices to leverage feedback in our CME activities - lots of agreement that feedback begets reflection which begets more robust learning and behavior change.

Our discussion was driven by the following topics:

T1 – What is your favorite adult learning principle? In other what is your favorite learning ‘adage’? #CMEchat

T2 – Why is feedback so important in learning? #CMEchat

T3 – What are the best approaches to providing feedback in live educational activities? For groups of 10? 50? 100+? #CMEchat

T4 – What are the best approaches of providing feedback in asynchronous educational activities? Print? Online? Mobile? #CMEchat

T5 – Are there best practices for building small groups, cohorts, or communities of learners? #CMEchat

You can review the transcript below (begin at the bottom) or download it HERE:

From User           Tweet

BrianSMcGowan              T5 - 70% of communities never grow b/c of systems failures. 20% fail b/c of lack of common vision. only ~10% grow and thrive. #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    @theCMEguy yes branches (remedial circuits) in programmed learning or more sophisticated modelling as well. Feedback as adaption. #CMEchat

theCMEguy        @BrianSMcGowan Agree. Have seen many communities fail for this reason. They were built simply cuz it seemed like thing to do #cmechat

CMEChat             The real impact of the #CMEchat lies in your action - please engage others to participate & take action on things your have learned! G’day!

CMEChat             As we get wrap up, please vote for the tweet of the day (#TOTD) seen during this week's #CMEchat.

CMEChat             Thx for participating in #CMEchat. Discussions herein are assumed 2 b personal opinion & not that of current, past, or future employers.

BrianSMcGowan              T5 - if you expect this community of learners to adapt to a new environment AND behave differently you are stacking the next...#CMEchat

dean_jenkins    @BrianSMcGowan yes connectivism in as much as your open reflections are feedback for others I suppose. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              #TOTY RT @CMEGrupe: What R the elements that have made #CMEChat successful?  Seems like this is the perfect demonstration project for T5.

BrianSMcGowan              t5 - if you try to build a community of learners without a simple and rock solid value proposition you will fail... #CMEchat

theCMEguy        @dean_jenkins So similar to branched learning then? #cmechat

CMEGrupe          What are the elements that have made #CMEChat successful?  Seems like this is the perfect demonstration project for T5...

BrianSMcGowan              @dean_jenkins - adaptive branching? #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T5 - i believe that the difference b/w a network and a community is the shared goal or collective intent, engineers must nail this #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    @theCMEguy machine learning as the computer makes suggestions for you based on your performance. Could be simple or very complex. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T5 - seems like a natural progression from feedback and reflection to social learning and connectivism (@dean_jenkins ??) #CMEchat

theCMEguy        “@BrianSMcGowan: t4 - anyone every create a CME cross-word puzzle...#brainstroming #CMEchat” >> Yes! Was a long time ago though...

BrianSMcGowan              @theCMEguy - error code 404 #cmechat #notthesmartestguyintheroom

theCMEguy        @dean_jenkins OK...you got me with "machine learning". Definition? #cmechat #notthesmartestguyintheroom

CMEChat             T5 – Are there best practices for building small groups or communities of learners? (to support feedback & social learning) #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              t4 - anyone every create a CME cross-word puzzle...#brainstroming #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    T4 ways of providing feedback to learners in asynchronous online activities include analysis, machine learning, and social linking #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              @BrianSMcGowan - but who doesn't like a challenge...that is at the heart of science...lets collect the data #CMEchat

theCMEguy        @BrianSMcGowan See my last tweet... #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              t2-4 is it fair to say that all of the benefits of feedback are really derived from the subsequent reflection? #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T4 - ideas for print? there is a sophisticated use of grammar & context that can be used to drive reflection in print. #CMEchat

jjuch      @briansmcgowan:"spacing and testing is a proven strategy to support learning" challenge is keeping learners participating over time #CMECHAT

theCMEguy        T4: Anyone ever offer to send outcomes summary to participants of CME? May be a form of feedback for print activities... #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              agreed. RT @theCMEguy: @rmtyner Not necessarily. Some auto email responses to comments. Have to come back to respond, tho. #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              t4 - engineer questions and answers that evolve over time...spacing and testing is a proven strategy to support learning  #CMEchat

theCMEguy        @rmtyner Not necessarily. Some auto email responses to comments. Have to come back to respond, tho. #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              @reginamotarjeme - every topic can be polled....so that lectures almost become mind-mapping or treasure map experiences...flexible #cmechat

rmtyner               @theCMEguy i love that idea - but the challenge that I come up with is the learners have to keep coming back #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T4 - the interactivity of the web formats make this a special case...for feedback can be engineered in a myriad of ways #CMEchat

reginamotarjeme            have not done live meetings in a long time, gamifying sounds intriguing, please xpand #cmechat

rmtyner               @BrianSMcGowan blame it on the DayQuil #CMEchat

theCMEguy        T4: I talk about this a lot but...opening comments for online activities. Moderated comments = 2 way feedback #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              @rmtyner - we have not raised topic T$ yet...#CMEchat

CMEChat             T4 – What are the best approaches of providing feedback in asynchronous educational activities? Print? Online? Mobile? #CMEchat

theCMEguy        “@BrianSMcGowan: T3 - gamifying a room is a great approach to layering constant feedback  #CMEchat” >> need to avoid the "cheesy factor"

BrianSMcGowan              t3 if you wield 'feedback' like a hammer, you will inevitably find those who would run for the exits. #FeedbackFatigue #CMEchat

jjuch      @theCMEguy T3: "...walked out of a prez because heard the words "small group discussion"? Agree. Need to be in right frame of mind #CMECHAT

BrianSMcGowan              T3 - gamifying a room is a great approach to layering constant feedback into a room #CMEchat - the energy is a form of feedback.

theCMEguy        @BrianSMcGowan Agreed! #cmechat

theCMEguy        T3: How many times have you walked out of a prez because heard the words "small group discussion"? #guiltilyraiseshand #cmechat

dean_jenkins    T3 feedback to large groups with 'normative' information, consensus views, plenaries, quantitative assessments (quizzes) are good. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              t3 - can we all agree that ARS can be used in several ways, but many times it serves no purpose and distracts. #CMEchat

jjuch      T3: ARS is good but even that is underused by learners in large rooms. Larger # of people, more creative/engaging need to make ARS #CMECHAT

BrianSMcGowan              t3 - interacting in small groups is theoretically sound/superior...but the individuals must be committed to the activity...#CMEchat

theCMEguy        T3: ARS is one way to gather feedback in large group setting. Trouble is, so many presenters dont know what to do w/ it #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              t3 - not exactly a best practice, but i've seen rooms where no one is interested in 'sharing and feedback' - must know the learners #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              especially w/ peer feedback RT @dean_jenkins: T2 feedback can be very destructive to learning though if delivered in the wrong way. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              t3 - it is important to think through practical approaches for live learning...careful to push feedback off on the learners/peers. #CMEchat

theCMEguy        T3: Had my first experience getting feedback from Twitter while presenting at #acehp12. Fantastic to have instantaneous feedback #cmechat

dean_jenkins    T2 feedback can be very destructive to learning though if delivered in the wrong way. #CMEchat

timclynch             T2 how often do you elicit qualitative and quantitative feedback?  Anyone else encounter barriers to explore beyond the CME eval? #cmechat

MedPedsDoctor               Some suggest millenial generation needs explicit feedback on behaviors, & need to point out "I am giving you feedback" now. #CMEchat

CMEChat             T3 – What are the best approaches to providing feedback in live educational activities? For groups of 10? 50? 100+? #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              does anyone get hungry when they talk about 'feed'back right before lunch...#CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               Feedback for me: next time, put the #cmechat on the calendar.  Gotta run: 11:30 meeting.  chat well, my friends! #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T2- what have we learned about the how feedback effects learning? validation, affirmation, recognition..what else? #CMEchat

YogAlicia3            #cmechat Late, lurking, and lunching. Alicia here.

BrianSMcGowan              Good Job Alex! RT @MedPedsDoctor: Feedback on feedback: love topic. Studied (and done it) up, down, left, right, & every other way. #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               Feedback on feedback: love this topic.  Studied (and done it) up, down, left, right, & every other way. #CMEchat

reginamotarjeme            agreed! RT @medpedsdoctor:  Feedback is formative, NOT summative.  It can guide summative, but is not summative #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              imagery!  RT @rmtyner: knee deep in Piaget and Knowles...ts #CMEchat

rmtyner               t2 feedback is critical from learning from mistakes #CMEchat

timclynch             Amen RT @dean_jenkins: T2 feedback IS learning. #cmechat

BrianSMcGowan              @MedPedsDoctor - my bad...typed the wrong word...i meant pulse-check ie, formative.. #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    T2 feedback IS learning. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              i think of this rather simply...effective feedback from faculty or peers is at the heart of formative assessment. #CMEchat #pulseCheck

timclynch             T2: Feedback is a main component in the E of ADDIE,  #cmechat

rmtyner               don't get me wrong… knee deep in Piaget and Knowles very different approaches to learning in children and adults #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               Formative vs summative feedback: t.co/MXHrQaT8  #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              t2 - the longer the period without feedback, the more onus on learners to self-assess...and this is never effective. #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               @BrianSMcGowan I will challenge the statement.  Feedback is formative, NOT summative.  It can guide summative, but is not summative #CMEchat

reginamotarjeme            RT @cmechat: T2 – so your teaching is in line with the learners need #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               Great recent "giving feedback" article: t.co/UBNQIbOF #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    @rmtyner but sometimes being 'paternal' or proscriptive is exactly what's needed. #CMEchat

rmtyner               @BrianSMcGowan some distinct differences in pedagogy and andragogy #CMEchat

CMEChat             T2 – Why is feedback so important in learning? #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              @rmtyner - but the differences are so hard to pin down and transient...in both cases adults and children #theydontlikethat #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    T1 always aim for high learning outcomes. #CMEchat

rmtyner               @dean_jenkins IMO with adults there is more to consider when teaching - can't treat adults like children #theydontlikethat #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              so far we have gotten some great 'feedback' and I feel like I am 'learning' a lot ;-) #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               T1. "Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em, then tell 'em, then tell 'em what you told 'em."  #isthatalearningprinciple #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              agree. RT @dean_jenkins: T1 there's no such thing as adult learners or 'child's learners. There's always a bit of both. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T1- i have seen little to convince me about learning styles...or this nonsense about 10% of what you read, 20% of what you hear #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               T1.  "Focus on the learner(s), not on the teacher."  #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    T1 there's no such thing as adult learners or 'child's learners. There's always a bit of both. #CMEchat

CMEGrupe          Excited to be joining for my 3rd #CMEChat in a row!  T1 - I actually used "Begin with the end in mind" in a conversation just this morning.

BrianSMcGowan              T1 - i also like the adage: "see one do one teach one" #CMEchat

theCMEguy        @BrianSMcGowan some are. Some...not so much. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              T1 - as for my favorite ALP - probably has to do with cognitive dissonance...and norming w/ peers #CMEchat

rmtyner               @BrianSMcGowan how do they know what they don't know?? #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    Dean Jenkins here from UK. Always taking my feedback on the chin. Smile and wave. #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              t1 - i have thought about my least favorite adult learning principle —-> 'adults are self directed' {were this only true...} #CMEchat

rmtyner               T1 I love "Test and Teach" it primes the learner #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              mr mom! RT @theCMEguy: @MedPedsDoctor I'm also trying to get a 4 y/o a snack. She has a shocking lack of interest in #CMEchat

CMEChat             T1 – What is your favorite adult learning principle? In other words...what is your favorite learning ‘adage’? #CMEchat

reginamotarjeme            Regina from Denver, finally made it in time #cmechat

theCMEguy        @MedPedsDoctor I'm also trying to get a 4 y/o a snack. She has a shocking lack of interest in #CMEchat

BrianSMcGowan              hard to believe we have been doing this for 10 months... #CMEchat

rmtyner               Cool @MedPedsDoctor we are a crew! RT @BrianSMcGowan: glad to see the Indianapolis crew has arrived to #CMEchat

rmtyner               Michelle from Indiana here with some help from DayQuil #CMEchat

MedPedsDoctor               Derek, didn't you know ... multitasking hasn't been shown to actually be effective? #donothavetheliteraturewithme #CMEchat

dean_jenkins    Positive feedback of course. #CMEchat
